El reino del medio y su relación con Asia

Protegida del exterior por barreras difíciles de franquear, la civilización china fue difundida o influyó en mayor o menor grado en las áreas geográficamente cercanas: Corea, Japón, las islas Ryukyu, el Sureste de Asia y Asia Central. En la mayoría de los casos, la influencia china fue buscada y aceptada y no impuesta por la fuerza. Lo que es más, en el siglo XIX la mayoría de los chinos, y aun los pueblos vecinos, se hubieran sorprendido al escuchar la expresión “cultura china" y se asombrarían aún más al saber que el valor de esta cultura podría ser tema de discusión, comparación y crítica. El centro y sede de esta cultura era el Reino del Medio.

Las profundas reformas que se pusieron en práctica en la República Popular China bajo el liderazgo de Deng Xiaoping marcan también el periodo de la historia reciente de ese país que podemos calificar como el de “la era Deng". Esta denominación no obedece a un mero capricho de palabras, sino al hecho de que en la construcción de la llamada “China nueva" dos personas desempeñaron el papel de líderes casi absolutos: el propio Deng y Mao Zedong.

Se dice comúnmente que mientras más cerca en la geografía se encuentran dos países, más complicadas son sus relaciones y mayores sus conflictos. Esa fórmula se aplica, de manera particular, a la relación entre China y Japón. El año 1997 marca el 25 aniversario de la normalización de los vínculos entre los países, después de la finalización de la Segunda Guerra en una interacción que ha sido un sube y baja constante, que ha tenido reconocimientos y rivalidades, rupturas y reconciliaciones, guerras y periodos de paz. Si se pudiera calificar el tipo de relación en una sola frase es probable que ésta sería la de una lucha por la hegemonía en la región.
